Born October 1893 Rogers Oram was baptised in St Andrews Church Dalton le Dale. He resided with his parents Christopher and Margaret Ann in Church Cottage together with his sisters Rachel, Mary Ann, Sarah Hannah his brothers John James, Christopher, Richard, and Thomas. Also residing with the family was Ada Ward the daughter of widowed Rachel.

Rogers was employed at Murton Colliery as a Cokeman.

1914 Rogers whilst living at 6 St Cuthbert’s Terrace Dalton le Dale, enlisted at Seaham Harbour in the Northumberland Fusiliers.

The Battalion was formed in Newcastle upon Tyne and was part of the First New Army

In 1915 the Regiment was mobilised for war and they proceeded to France in the third week of August landing at Boulogne.

During the Battle of Loos the regiment held the front at Bois Grenier, they were relieved from that sector at the end of January 1916. March 3rd they returned to the front line, taking over a sector between Boyau de L’Ersatz and the Souchez River, with the Artillery taking over an exposed position where they were subjected to heavy shelling. In early March a tunnelling Company was established and men with a mining background were transferred from the ranks
